Folios 215-216: John Clarke Searle, HMS Spanker. Reports that Lieutenant McGill and William March, Carpenter, have asked to move with him to HMS Pelican. There will be two other Lieutenants left on HMS Spanker, and there is no immediate duty for the Carpenter. There are also 15 Petty Officers and Able Seamen, 8 Landsmen, and 2 Ordinary Seamen, exclusive of the Greenwich Hospital men, still on board. Observes that an additional number of Greenwich Hospital men would be sufficient for the duty of HMS Spanker in her present state. Notes that having Lieutenant McGill and William Brown with him would speed up the fitting of HMS Pelican. If there is nobody in particular in mind for Boatswain of HMS Pelican, he has in mind James Nesbitt of HMS Liberty, who served with him as Boatswain's Mate during the time he commanded HMS Liberty. He merits promotion, is the son of an old Boatswain, and has served many years.
