Folios 472-473: Charles Rowley, Tendring Hall, Colchester. Samuel Kyle, Acting Lieutenant of HMS Delight has requested him to apply on his behalf as he learns there is an objection to his confirmation from his acting as Master of HMS Eagle which he did as a result of his [Rowley's] specific order as the Master had 3 months' leave of absence from the Commander in Chief. He remained as Acting Master for nearly 18 months as he could not procure one abroad. He sent him for promotion on board the Commander in Chief's ship when he was superceded by a Master from England. Recommends him strongly and comments that his situation in life places him above the line of Masters.
