Description

Folios 453-454: Charles Rowley, HMS Eagle, Chatham. Encloses an order and certificate for issuing an extra allowance of meat to his company and men from other ships for their exertions made in getting the ship off shore at Veere [Veerse] Gat on 31 July [1809]. The Victualling Commissioners say it cannot be allowed to John Waldron, Purser, without an Admiralty order.

Folios 455-456: enclosure with folios 453-454. Order dated 31 July 1809 from Charles Rowley, HMS Eagle, to John Waldron, Purser of HMS Eagle, given on board HMS Eagle at Veere [Veerse] Gat. The company of HMS Eagle were up all night endeavouring to get the ship off shore off the island of Walcheron together with men from HMS Venerable, HMS Statira, HMS Lavinia, HMS Dryad, HMS Ganges and HMS Rota. They are exhausted and he directs him to issue an allowance of one pound of pork and one bill of rum per man. Certificate dated 31 July 1809 to the Victualling Commissioners from Charles Rowley given on board HMS Eagle, Veere [Veerse] Gat. John Waldron issues over and above the daily allowance 285 pieces of pork and 17 and a half gallons of rum to men as result of their exertions getting the ship off the shoal.
