Description

Folios 111-112: Charles Ryder, Regulating Officer, Falmouth. In answer to the letter of 17 [October 1809] concerning Thomas Robinson, states that he was impressed on 9 [October 1809] at St Mawes, having gone on shore from the Venus immediately on her arrival to avoid being impressed. He is an Able Seaman aged 30. He was sent to Plymouth on HMS Goldfinch on 14 [October 1809]. Also acknowledges receipt of letter of 16 [October 1809] directing the discharge of William Murray now on board HMS Experiment on the receipt of 2 Seamen or 4 Landsmen as substitutes and directing the discharge of John Benny, an apprentice, now on board HMS Tromp, as the letter did not reach him until he had been sent to Plymouth on HMS Goldfinch. He has forwarded it to Admiral Young at Plymouth.

Folios 113-114: enclosure with folios 111-112. Letter dated 14 October 1809 from Hullett Brothers & Co, 26 Austen Friars, [London] to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. Their ship the Venus, Master Mr Crisp, from the River Plate fo London, was forced by adverse winds to put in to Falmouth, The 2nd Mate, Thomas Robinson, has been impressed and is at present on board HMS Tromp. The Venus has a valuable cargo on board and a considerable quantity of spice and it is vital to have the services of Thomas Robinson . Requests his discharge in exchange for substitutes.
