Description

Folios 81-82: John Richards, 32 Berners Street, London. Encloses a copy of an order from Rear Admiral Sir A Cochrane as a result of which he went on board HMS Pompee at St Johns in Antigua on 31 July [1809] and continued on board that ship until 31 August [1809] which he had the Admiral's permission to quit, which he did at Halifax, and proceeded to England by the packet. Asks to be ordered a remuneration for his loss of time and carriage to England by the packet.

Folios 83-84: enclosure with folios 81-82. Copy of letter dated 18 July 1809 from Alexander Cochrane, HMS Neptune, Carlisle Bay, Barbados, to Captain John Richards, HMS Abercrombie. Having been informed that he has been promoted to Post Rank in England as a result of which Captain Fahir of HMS Pompee has been given command of HMS Abercrombie. As Captain Hawke of HMS Melampus has been ordered to be sent to this station and tried by Court Martial for disobeying his orders, and as he is the principal evidence in support of the charge he must remain in that country until further notice. When he is superceded he will be received on board the Flag Ship and he will recommend that he receives proper remuneration for his loss of time if any occurs and will provide him with a passage to England in a war ship.
