Description

Folios 316-317: Thomas Rogers, HMS Mercury off Ancona. Enclosing a copy of his letter to Lord Keith and letters from William Stuart and William Hoste,

Folios 318-319: enclosure with folios 316-317. Letter dated 17 July 1801 from William Stuart, HMS Champion off Ancona to Thomas Rogers. Cruising off Otranto he saw vessels which proved to be a French Trabacolo and an Aid de Camp to General Murat captured by Mr Rangecroft and a Russian schooner taken by Mr Batt. With HMS resource and Mutine, he chased a vessel which took shelter in a small cove under the Tower of Gumaja between Vierti and Pecsheci at the foot of Mount of Angels. After capture, the vessel had Neapolitan colours but with letters to different ports where the French were quartered. Mr Winterbottom, acting master, was shot and killed.

Folios 321-322: enclosure with folios 316-317. Letter from William Hoste. HMS Mutine off Brindisi to Thomas Rogers, HMS Mercury. He found a man of War the Lepari under the command of R Settins and a Polacre ship under Neapolitan colours rounding Cape Cancel which ran aground whilst being chased. After being fired on and unable to refloat and capture the ships, both were destroyed. He commends the actions of George Antrim or Antram.
