Description

Folios 237-238: William Henry Ricketts, HMS Naiad at sea, enclosing information of importance and his proceeding on its receipt.

Folios 239 - 240: enclosure with folios 237-238. Letter dated 20 May 1801 from William Henry Ricketts, HMS Naiad at sea to Admiral William Cornwallis. French frigates La [C?] and La [C?] sailed from Bordeaux 22 April 1801. The Phania packet captured by the French privateer Psychi of Bordeaux was recaptured by HMS Naiad 5 May 1801. The Le Bilisaine and La Frayuise from Cherbourg got into Corunna 26 April 1801 is bound for Cadiz with shot and shells with orders not to chase nor to attempt to sail unless the post at Cape Finisterre signals the coast being clear of English cruisers. 10,000 French troops have landed at Burgos in Spain.

Folios 241-142: enclosure with folios 237-238. Letter dated 17 May 1801 from William Henry Ricketts. Intelligence from Lieutenant Don Juan Jean Antonio Barbuto of His Catholic Majesty's Service and late captain of the Alcudia, Spanish packet captured by the boats of HMS Naiad and Phaeton. Intelligence on Spanish ships which sailed from [?] and arrived in Cadiz where they are being fitted out by the French.

Folios 243-244: enclosure with folios 237-238. Letter dated 17 May 1801 from William Henry Ricketts, HMS Naiad, Bay of Pontevidra to James Nicoll Morris, HMS Phaeton. Ordering him to proceed immediately to Cadiz and elucidate the information received from Don Barbuto and then transmit to the secretary of the admiralty through HM consul at Faro and get it to Lord Keith.

Folios 244-245: enclosure with folios 237-238. Letter dated 17 May 1801 from William Henry Ricketts, HMS Naiad, Pontevidra Bay. In consequence of the enclosed information, he has ordered James Nicoll Morris , HMS Phaeton to proceed to Cadiz and convoy or transmit whatever intelligence he receives to HMS service.

Folios 247-248: enclosure with folios 237-238. Letter dated 19 May 1801 from William Henry Ricketts, HMS Naiad, Cape Finisterre. He believes that the French are equipping 7 sail of the Spanish line in Cadiz under the direction of the French consul. He has dispatched James Nicoll Morris, HMS Phaeton to Cadiz and to transmit any information to HMS consul at Faro to check the information.
