The Admiralty Experimental Station (AES), Welwyn (sometimes referred to as Station IX), came into being in 1945, when the Directorate of Miscellaneous Weapons Development took over the Inter-Service Research Bureau establishment at the Frythe, Welwyn, Herts.
In 1946 it was placed under the Director of Aeronautical and Engineering Research (RNSS Headquarters) to continue development on the uses of hydrogen peroxide as a propellant. It was conveniently close to the factories of ICI and Laporte Chemicals, which were both involved in this work.
It was closed in November 1951, though its work continued for a time at Coulport under the Superintendent, Torpedo Experiment and Design (STED).
Please note the acronym AES was also used in connection with other establishments, including ARL and AAEE.
