The Admiralty Underwater Weapons Department was responsible for material aspects of underwater weapons and their associated equipment and of countermeasures to them. It was set up in 1944, to administer research establishments investigating equipment and other aspects of underwater weapons and countermeasures, and was responsible for the work of the Admiralty Mining Establishment, Torpedo Experimental Establishment, Underwater Detection Establishment, and the Underwater Launching Establishment.
