Description

Folios 199-218: Correspondence regarding the obstruction of the Canton river by the Chinese and the restriction of passage within certain limits. Contains an overview of the correspondence (folio 199).

Encloses letter (folios 200-205): John Hope, Commander, HMS Fly at Canton dated 9 January 1884 to Vice Admiral G O Willes CB, Commander-in-Chief, regarding the barring of the Canton River in certain places and encloses a translation by L C Hopkins (folios 201-205) of correspondence received from Viceroy Chang.

Encloses letter (folio 206): Vice Admiral Willes, Commander-in-Chief, China, dated 11 January 1884 to the Secretary of the Admiralty, submitting correspondence regarding the Chinese authorities notifying their intention of restricting the passage to a certain channel.

Encloses letter (folios 207-211): G [George] W Hill, Commander, HMS Linnet at Hong Kong dated 21 January 1884 to Vice Admiral G O Willes CB, Commander-in-Chief, reporting on the building by the Chinese and the strength of the forts on the passage. Includes a plan of the forts under construction (folio 211).

Encloses letter (folio 212): H F Hance, HM Consulate, Canton dated 24 January 1884 to His Excellency, Vice Admiral George O Willes CB, Commander-in-Chief, Hong Kong, reporting that the Viceroy proposes to leave a passage of 150 feet in both barriers.

Encloses letter (folio 213): H F Hance, HM Consulate, Canton dated 26 January 1884 to His Excellency, Vice Admiral George O Willes CB, Commander-in-Chief, Hong Kong, reporting again that the Viceroy through an official communication proposes to leave a passage of 150 Chinese feet in both barriers.
