Description

Folios 85-95: Correspondence regarding the protection of British Commerce. Contains an overview page (folio 85).

Encloses letter (folio 86): F [Francis] Bulkeley Johnson, Chairman [of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce], Hong Kong dated 16 April 1883 to His Excellency, Vice Admiral George O Willes CB, Commander-in-Chief, regarding the naval protection to British Commerce.

Encloses letter (folio 87): W Wykeham Perry, Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief, HMS Audacious at Hong Kong dated 17 April 1883 to Chairman, Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce, responding with the current objectives of the naval presence in the waters.

Encloses letter (folio 88): W H Marsh, Administering the Government, Government House, Hong Kong dated 9 October 1883 to Commodore Cuming, forwarding a letter that will be sent to the Principal Secretary.

Encloses letter (folio 89): P Ryrie [?], Vice Chairman, Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong dated 6 October 1883 to The Right Honourable, The Earl of Derby, HM Principal Secretary for the state of the colonies, regarding the lack of protection of British Merchants during the summer months in the Chinese Treaty Ports.

Encloses letter (folios 90-91): George O Willes, Vice Admiral, Commander-in-Chief, HMS Audacious at Yokohama dated 22 October 1883 to the Secretary of the Admiralty, responding to the questions raised by the letter from the Chamber of Commerce.

Encloses letter (folios 92-95): Admiralty (signed George Tryon), dated 10 January 1884 to Vice Admiral Willes CB, China, forwarding a reply that was sent from the Admiralty (folios 93-94) and the Colonial office (folio 95).
