Description

Folios 66-76: Correspondence regarding the dropping of a daily time ball on HMS Victor Emanuel for the benefit of shipping at Hong Kong. Contains an overview page (folio 66).

Encloses letter (folios 67-70): W. Marsh, Administrator and Commander-in-Chief, Government House, Hong Kong dated 26 April 1882 to Commodore W H Cuming RN, forwarding the proposal by the Harbour Master (folios 68-70) to drop a time ball on board the HMS Victor Emanuel.

Encloses letter (folio 71): George O Willes, Vice Admiral, Commander-in-Chief, HMS Vigilant in the Peiko River dated 8 May 1882 to Commodore Cuming, HMS Victor Emanuel, approving of the time ball proposal and suggests that it should be dropped daily at 1 pm.

Encloses letter (folio 72): W H Cuming, Commodore, HMS Victor Emanuel at Hong Kong dated 12 September 1882 to Vice Admiral George O Willes CB, Commander-in-Chief, China Station, informing that a time ball has been installed and that it is dropped daily (except Sundays) at 1 pm.

Encloses letter (folios 73-74): Admiralty (signed George Tryon), dated 20 September 1882 to Vice Admiral Willes CB, China, regarding the arrangements of the time ball and the communications that has happened surrounding it.

Encloses letter (folio 75): Vice Admiral Willes, Commander-in-Chief, China, dated 23 November 1882 to the Secretary of the Admiralty, forwarding correspondence concerning the dropping of a time ball on board HMS Victor Emanuel at Hong Kong.

Encloses letter (folio 76): Admiralty (signed George Tryon), dated 17 January 1883 to Vice Admiral Willes, China, informing that the arrangement regarding the renumeration of the officer involved in dropping the time ball is approved.
