The Admiralty Oil Laboratory was set up in 1953 to improve the quality control of naval fuels, lubricants, and hydraulic fluids, but concentrated mainly on the technology of petroleum-based hydrocarbons. In 1977 it was absorbed into the National Gas Turbine Establishment, then in 1980 it became the Petroleum Technology Division of the Royal Aircraft Establishment
