Description

Folios 174-175: Frederick Lewis Maitland, HMS Loire, Plymouth Sound. Encloses a copy of his letter to Admiral Lord Alan Gardner of 25 December 1805 describing the capture of the French frigate La Libre.

Folio 176: enclosed with folios 174-175. Copy of a letter dated 25 December 1805 from Captain Frederick Lewis Maitland, HMS Loire, at sea, to Admiral Lord Alan Gardner, Commander in Chief, Cork. Reports the capture of the French frigate La Libre, commanded by Captain de Frigate Descorches, by the Loire and HMS Egyptienne off the Isle of Rhé, [Île de Ré] the previous day. Commends the conduct of his own ship's company and report that Lieutenant Phillips Cosby Handfield, acting in command of the Egyptienne, is similarly complementary about his crew. Encloses a return of killed and wounded.

Folio 177: enclosed with folios 174-175. Copy of a return by Lieutenant Phillips Cosby Handfield, HMS Egyptienne, of the seven wounded during the capture of the French frigate La Loire on 24 December 1805; Boatswain Thomas Robinson, seamen William Phinn, John Williams, John Davis and James Lucas and Marines James McGuire and Samuel Evans.

Folio 178: enclosed with folios 174-175. Copy of a return by Captain Frederick Lewis Maitland, HMS Loire, with a nominal list of the nine wounded aboard the Loire and a summary of the casualties on the French frigate La Libre during the capture of the French vessel.
