Description

Folios 476-477: Joshua Mulock, HMS Hindostan, Motherbank. Reports that while on passage from Port Mahon to Algiers he and Captain Samuel James Ballard of HMS Pearl detained a vessel from Ragusa and sent her into Port Mahon, where she proved to be carrying rich presents from the French government to the Dey of Algiers including jewellery, watches and fabrics. The Dey is demanding that the vessel be released and intends to appeal directly to the British Government.

Folios 478-480: enclosed with folios 476-477. Copy of a report signed by Captain Joshua Mulock, HMS Hindostan and Captain Samuel James Ballard of HMS Pearl [the copy erroneously gives Captain Ballard's ship as the Hindostan], not dated, to Vice Admiral Lord Keith, Commander in Chief, Mediterranean. Report the circumstances in which they detained the Ragusan vessel El Volace, which proved to be carrying gifts from the French government to the Dey of Algiers. Mentions Marseilles, Tetuan, Carthagena, Monsieur Bacre, Morocco, Monsieur Busmach, Barbary, Mahmed Smael, Hage Mahmet Fredrico Morocco.

Folio 481: [Blank].

Folios 482-483: enclosed with folios 476-477. Copy of a letter from Vice Admiral Lord Keith, HMS Minotaur, Leghorn [Livorno] Roads, to Captain Joshua Mulock, HMS Hindostan, 13 July 1800. Directs him to provide a detailed report of the circumstances in which he detained the vessel from Ragusa which the Dey of Algiers is now demanding be released.

Folios 484-485: enclosed with folios 476-477. Copy of a report dated 31 July 1800 from Captain Joshua Mulock, HMS Hindostan, Port Mahon, to Vice Admiral Lord Keith, Commander in Chief, Mediterranean. Explains his reasons for detaining the Ragusan vessel and encloses [not present] an extract from his log showing the position and circumstances when she was intercepted. He is confident the Admiralty court will decide she was not going to Tetuan but instead was bound for Algiers carrying presents from the French Government for the Dey of Algiers.
