Encloses letter (folio 230): W H Cuming, Commodore, HMS Victor Emanuel at Hong Kong dated 9 July 1883 to Vice Admiral George O Willes CB, Commander-in-Chief China Station, reporting on the trial of Miiki Coal (Japan).
Encloses letter (folios 231-233): Harry Williams, Inspector of Machinery, HM Naval Yard Hong Kong dated 29 June 1883 to the Commander in Charge, reporting on both Takashima and Mikki coals, resulting in the assessment that Miiki Coal is superior to Takashima. Highlighting that the sulphur content of the Miiki coal is less than is found in ordinary English coal.
Encloses letter (folio 234): Butterfield and Swire, Agent, Mitsui Bussau Kaishia, HM Naval Yard Hong Kong dated 22 May 1883 to W Hymes Esq, responding to a newspaper advertisement regarding the supply of coal. Is offering Mikki Coal, which is usually consumed by the merchant marine in Shanghai.
Encloses letter (folio 235): William Hymes, Acting Storekeeper, HM Naval Yard [Hong Kong] dated 22 May 1883 to Messrs Butterfield & Swire, Hong Kong, agreeing to try the coal stating that only Takashima coal is being purchased at the moment.
Encloses letter (folio 236): Butterfield & Swire, Hong Kong dated 23 May 1883 to W Hymes Esq, Acting Storekeeper, confirming that 2 tons of Mikki Coal has been delivered to the Wharf for testing.
Encloses reference sheet (folio 237): W Hymes, Acting Storekeeper, HM Naval Yard Hong Kong dated 6 July 1883 to Messrs Butterfield & Swire, Agents, Miiki Colliery, asking for the price of 500-600 tons of Miiki Coal. Reply on same sheet, stating that delivery to the Naval Yard Coal Stores would cost $5.80 per ton.
