Description

Folios 209-222: Correspondence regarding the trial of Moara Coal (Labuan), using it in equal quantities with Patent Fuel, with brief overview (folio 209).

Encloses letter (folio 210): Admiralty (signed G Tryon), dated 13 July 1882 to Vice Admiral Geo [George] O Willes CB, China, informing that coal fields on the Island of Borneo have been granted by the Sultan of Brunei to Mr W C Cowie. Instructs to test and report on the value of this coal.

Encloses letter (folios 211-213): W C Cowie, Labuan dated 30 December 1882 to Captain Tracey, HMS Audacious, Labuan Harbour, offering the supply of Muara coal.

Encloses letter (folios 214-215): J [John] M McQuhae, Lieutenant Commander, HMS Foxhound at Singapore dated 12 April 1883 to Captain Pasley, HMS Champion, Senior Officer, reporting on the value of coal supplied by W Cowie at Labuan, highlighting that it burns too quickly to be used alone.

Encloses letter (folios 216-218): John A Lemon, Chief Engineer, HMS Fly at Labuan dated 31 May 1883 to Commander John Hope, HMS Fly, reporting on the Muara Coal.

Encloses letter (folio 219): Vice Admiral Willes, Commander-in-Chief, China, dated 30 June 1883 to the Secretary of the Admiralty, submitting reports from the HMS Fly on the use of the Muara Coal.

Encloses letter (folios 220-221): Harry Williams, Inspector of Machinery, HM Naval Yard Hong Kong dated 16 July 1883 to the Commander in Charge, Hong Kong, referring to the report from HMS Fly and Foxhound on Muara Coal and the desirability of using it with Patent Fuel. Suggesting a mix of 1/3 Muara Coal (fast burning) with 2/3 of Welsh coal (slow burning).

Encloses letter (folio 222): Vice Admiral Willes, Commander-in-Chief, China, dated 26 July 1883 to the Secretary of the Admiralty, submitting the report by the inspector of machinery on the report of the use of Muara Coal based on the reports from the HMS Foxhound and HMS Fly.
