Description

Folios 233-291: Correspondence regarding the torpedo depot at Kowloon especially regarding staff in the management and care of boats, torpedoes, etc.

Encloses letter (folios 233-240): Commodore George Digby Moraut, HMS Victor Emanuel at Hong Kong dated 19 March 1887 to Vice Admiral R Vesey Hamilton CB, Commander-in-Chief, China Station, regarding the position of the Engineer appointed for duty with the Torpedo Boats.

Encloses letter (folios 241-253): Commodore George Digby Moraut, HMS Victor Emanuel at Hong Kong dated 30 March 1887 to Vice Admiral R Vesey Hamilton CB, Commander-in-Chief, China Station, reporting in relation to the smallest staff it is considered necessary to keep to Whitehead Torpedoes at Hong Kong efficient. This includes estimates from the Inspector of Machinery and the Torpedo Lieutenant.

Encloses letter (folios 254-267): Commodore W H Maxwell; Captain of HMS Keantur M S Dunlop; Torpedo Lieutenant HMS Victor Emanuel F S Foley; Inspector of Machinery H Bentrow, HMS Victor Emanuel at Hong Kong dated 5 May 1887 to Vice Admiral R Vesey Hamilton CB, Commander-in-Chief, China Station, reporting on the findings of the committee held to enquire into Torpedo Depot Management at Kowloon.

Folio 268: Brief note of Henry Benbow, Inspector of Machinery, regarding the instructions given to executive officers and seamen regarding torpedo warfare.

Encloses letter (folio 269): Admiralty (signed W Graham, Controller), dated 10 December 1886 to Hong Kong, (Home and Foreign Yards), regarding the direction that all first class torpedo boasts are to be kept ready for service at the shortest notice and are to be placed in the first class steam reserve on completion.

Encloses letter (folio 270): Admiralty (signed Evan Macgregor), dated 22 March 1886, informing about the importance of keeping all first class torpedo boats ready for service at the shortest notice.

Encloses letter (folios 271-273): F I Foley, Lieutenant (T), HMS Victor Emanuel at Hong Kong dated 12 March 1887 to Commodore George Digby Moraut, reporting on smallest staff required for Torpedo Depot in the addition to present staff. This includes the number of Whitehead Torpedoes on the station and the numbers on individual ships (lists HMS Audacious, HMS Wivern, HMS Leander, HMS Constance, HMS Cordelia and HMS Calliope).

Encloses letter (folios 274-279): H Benbow, Inspector of Machinery, Naval Yard Hong Kong dated 15 March 1887 to Commander in Charge, Naval Establishments, Hong Kong, reporting additional staff required for Torpedo Depot and Torpedo Flotilla, which includes an estimate of staff for Whitehead Torpedo Store and Torpedo Banks and the increase required to present staff.

Encloses letter (folios 280-283): Admiralty (signed Evan Macgregor), dated 1 March 1888 to Vice Admiral Sir Nowell Salmon VC KCB, China, responding to the requested staff regarding the Torpedo Depot and informing that some staff have been sent out on the Jamar in December [1887]. Additionally, once the four 12.5 feet Torpedo Boats are sent out additional staff will be allowed.

Encloses letter (folios 284-291): W Rickelts, Lieutenant (T), HMS Victor Emanuel at Hong Kong dated 3 April 1888 to Commodore W H Maxwell [?], HMS Victor Emanuel, with report relating to the new [?]ment of personnel at the Torpedo Depot at Hong Kong.
