Folios 214-228: Correspondence regarding the contracts for the supply of coal to HM ships at Nagasaki.
Encloses letter (folios 214-222): W H Hall, Captain and Senior Officer, HMS Severn at Yokohama dated 1 November 1889 to Vice Admiral Sir Nowell Salmon VC KCB, Commander-in-Chief, China, forwarding correspondence (folios 217-222) regarding the potential loaning of the depot [at Yokohama] to the Japanese.
Encloses telegram (folio 223): Admiral, dated 17 November 1889 to British Navy, Yokohama, stating 'Depot to be let to Japanese on terms offered'.
Encloses memorandum (folio 224): Nowell Salmon, Vice Admiral, dated 18 November 1889 to the Secretary of the Admiralty, submitting for information regarding the letting of the naval dock to the Japanese for temporary use.
Encloses letter (folio 225): Admiralty (signed Evan Macgregor), dated 10 January 1890 to Vice Admiral Sir Nowell Salmon VC KCB, Commander-in-Chief, China, regarding the temporary use of the Japanese government of the Naval Depot at Yokohama and the approval of the terms offered.
Encloses letter (folios 226-227): J J Enslie, HM Consul, British Consulate, Yokohama dated 4 October 1889 to His Excellency Vice Admiral Sir Nowell Salmon VC KCB, forwarding a translated letter of the Chig of the Ken (folio 227) regarding the decision to give up the naval yard.
Encloses letter (folio 228): Nowell Salmon, Vice Admiral, HMS Imperieuse at Yokohama dated 5 October 1889 to J J Enslei, HM Consul, Yokohama, in response to the letter forwarded by the consul stating that at current the instructions are to retain the site at present.
