Description

Folios 82-89: Correspondence regarding the completion of a survey of Hong Harbour.

Encloses letter (folios 82-85): F Fleming, Officer Administering the Government, Government House, Hong Kong, dated 22 August 1890 to Commodore Church R.N., submitting a letter (folios 83-85) that suggests the desirability to complete the Admiralty's survey of a portion of the Harbour of Hong Kong, which has previously been made in 1886 and 1887 by Commander Moore of the HMS Rambler.

Encloses letter (folio 86): Nowell Salmon, Vice Admiral, HMS Imperieuse at Hakodate dated 17 September 1890 to the officer administrating the Government of Hong Kong, informing that the request has been submitted to the Admiralty and highlights that the HMS Rambler is currently surveying the China coast.

Encloses memorandum (folio 87): Nowell Salmon, Vice Admiral, dated 17 September 1890 to the Secretary of the Admiralty, submitting the correspondence regarding the completion of the survey of Hong Kong Harbour to the Admiralty.

Encloses letter (folios 88-89): Admiralty (signed Evan Macgregor), dated 30 October 1890 to Vice Admiral Sir Nowell Salmon VC KCB, China, informing that the matter is under consideration. However, due to the high number of urgent surveys needed for the protection of HM ships and too few survey vessels, a survey of Hong Kong harbour is not a priority.
