Description

Folios 151-175: Correspondence regarding the defences of Hong Kong and Singapore with reports by the Commodore and Senior Officer respectively. Contains a title page (folio 151).

Encloses letter (folio 152): Charles F Hillyar, Vice Admiral, Commander-in-Chief, HMS Audacious at Yokohama dated 6 August 1878 to the Secretary of the Admiralty, outlining the object, area and works of the Arsenal at Foochow.

Encloses letter (folios 152-164): G Watson, Commodore, HMS Victor Emanuel at Hong Kong dated 11 July 1878 to Vice Admiral Charles F Hillyar CB, Commander-in-Chief, reporting on the steps that have been taken to defend the port of Hong Kong. Encloses a plan [folio 162, since removed with reference MPI 492/6] and a report by Lieutenant Raymnd. [?] Needham (folios 157-164) regarding the batteries that have been constructed.

Encloses letter (folios 165-171): G Watson, Commodore, HMS Victor Emanuel at Hong Kong dated 19 July 1878 to Vice Admiral C F Hillyar CB, Commander-in-Chief, forwarding a letter (folios 166-171) to Major General Donovan who commands the project regarding the defences of Hong Kong.

Encloses letter (folios 172-173): Charles F Hillyar, Vice Admiral, Commander-in-Chief, HMS Audacious at Hong Kong dated 3 April 1878 to the Secretary of the Admiralty, regarding the probability of war between Great Britain and Russia, and that there is not a single perceivable gun mounted in battery which could defend Hong Kong if the Naval Forces are called away.

Encloses letter (folios 174-175): George S Bosanquet, Captain and Senior Officer, HMS Diamond at Singapore dated 3 August 1878 to Vice Admiral Charles F Hillyar CB, Commander-in-Chief, reporting on the defences of Singapore.
