Administrative / biographical background

The Court of Appeal Criminal Division hears appeals against proceedings in the Crown Court, most commonly convictions, sentences and confiscation orders and occasionally cases referred by the Attorney General. The court also functions as the Court Martial Appeal Court when it hears appeals from decisions made by military courts.

Publication of court judgments has long been standard practice in line with the principles of open justice. The individual judges who hand down judgments have the right to determine whether the judgment text should be published.
