Administrative / biographical background

The Directorate of Physical Research (DPR) was one of the four headquarters directorates set up under the newly created Chief of the Royal Naval Scientific Service in 1946. The directorate supplied professional direction of physics and mathematics research in naval research establishments as well as managing such research that was carried out under commercial contract.

In order to avoid confusion with public relations, the directorate later changed its title to the Directorate of Naval Physical Research (DNPR).

The Co-ordination of Value Development (CVD) was established as a department by the Director of Scientific Research in 1938; after the creation of the Royal Naval Scientific Service in 1946, the department came under the Director of Physical Research.
