Description

Folios 262-263: William Ramsden, HMS Ferret, Hamoaze. Has received orders from Rear Admiral Charles Vinicombe Penrose to revictual the ship for two months and gave orders to Mr James Andrew Sparrow, the Purser, to complete her with provisions and necessaries, on the morning of the 15th I was ordered to proceed to sea immediately, leaving the Purser on shore which I have reported to Rear Admiral Penrose, stating his neglect, on arrival St Andero [Santander] wrote to Rear Admiral Penrose, Mr Beal was acting Purser in place of Mr Sparrow, Mr Sparrow was reported as sailing on a merchant brig to catch up but that ship was reported lost, has reappeared in Santander but his conduct has been unsatisfactory.

Folios 264-265: enclosure in folios 262-263. Admiralty Note date 4th May 1814. John Beal, now acting, to have a Warrant as Purser of HMS Ferret and Mr Sparrow to be declared absent without leave.
