Description

Folios 223-224: John Tremayne Rodd, HMS Warrior, Spithead. He writes that he has been approached by his midshipman Mr JA Reeve who sayes he has received a letter from Lord Melville's secretary encouraging him to seek promotion. Mr Reeve has asked him to forward his memorial and certificates and this he now does. He also encloses the memorial and certificates of Mr William Vale, also a midshipman on HMS Warrior together with an order from Captain Standly that he act as Master of HMS Arab.

Folios 225-226: enclosure to folios 223-224. The memorial of JA Reeve midshipman of HMS Warrior. He sets out the details of his 10 year career in the navy and the fact that he passed his examination in 1811. He also encloses his certificates (not enclosed). He sayes he has been serving in the West Indies where he was hoping to gain promotion. he suffered from the climate, however, which forced him to leave Jamaica. He asks the Admiralty to consider him for promotion.

Folios 227-228: enclosure to folios 223-224. The covering letter from JA Reeve to the Admiralty enclosing his memorial.

Folio 229: enclosure to folios 223-224. The memorial of Mr William Vale, Midhipman of HMS Warrior. He sets out the details of his career. He has been in the navy for 9 years and has passed his examinations. He encloses his certificates (not enclosed). He sayes he has spent the greater part of his career in frigates. He went to the West Indies, hoping to gain promotion there but the climate forced him to return. He hopes he will be promoted.

Folios 230-231: enclosure to folios 223-224. A covering letter from William Vale to the Admiralty enclosing his memorial.
