Description

Folios 205-206: Josias Rowley, HMS America, Hamoaze. He encloses a memorial from Captain H Rea Captain of Marines of HMS America. He commends the gallantry and good conduct of Captain Rea and so he supports his claim for promotion.

Folios 207-208: enclosure to folios 205-206. A memorial from Captain Henry Rea of the 49th Company of the Royal Marines aboard HMS America dated 3 October 1814 and addressed tp the Admiralty. He has served as a marine for 20 years and he sets out the history of his many actions both in Europe, particularly in Italy in and around Genoa, and in South America, in which he has taken part. These include seizing forts and batteries, boarding vessels, seizing artillery pieces and an incident in an action at the River Plate, witnessed by Captain, now Vice Admiral Losack when he was injured. He mentions he has served on HMS Kent and HMS Wizard as well as HMS America but also under the command of Captain Dundas of HMS Edinburgh during an action involving several vessels. He also mentions a land action under the command of Lord William Bentinck and Colonel Travers in taking the fortress of Saint Mary in the Gulf of Spezzia. (probably La forte Santa Maria in the gulf of Spezia). He points out that he has been a captain for 9 years and asks that he be considered for promotion.
