Description

Folios 126-127: George Reynolds, HMS Tribune, off the Rock at the entrance to the Sound. Encloses a copy of a letter he has sent to the Commander in Chief explaining the steps taken by three American ships to evade the blockade of Elsinore.

Folios 128-129: enclosed with folios 126-127. Copy of a letter from Captain George Reynolds, HMS Tribune, off the Kell, to Vice Admiral Sir James Saumarez, Commander in Chief, Baltic, 16 October 1810. Reports that neutral vessels are trying to evade the blockade on Elsinore, cites three American vessels on passage from St Petersburg, the Swift, Perseverance and Endeavour, which anchored at Copenhagen and collected a pass for the Sound. They were boarded by Captain Reynolds and Captain John Quillam of HMS Alexandria, but they did not feel justified in detaining the vessels, even though they suspected that goods from Elsinore were being sent overland to the ships. Cites the case of the Maria, which had to be released in 1805 in similar circumstances, and notes that such ships then pass through the Sound between Zealand and the Swedish coast without anchoring off Elsinore. The Swift has been stopped before the previous July and sent into Warnenbury [Warnemunde ?]. Thinks that the evasive measures are a result of the seizure of the Mary, an American brig which he has sent to England for adjudication.
