Description

Folios 106-107: Wilson Rathbone, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Acknowledges the letter returning the papers which accompanied his report on the case of William Butcher. He has no reason to doubt the truth of the grandmother's affidavit, but detained Butcher solely because of the reasons given in his letter of 19 October.

Folios 108-109. enclosed with folios 106-107. Letter from The Reverend George Lloyd Lamb, Rector of Playden, Rye, Sussex, to the Admiralty, not dated. Writes seeking the discharge of William Butcher, who was impressed at North Shields and is now aboard HMS Ceres at the Nore. Butcher is an apprentice to Robert McRieth, Master of the schooner Collingwood of Rye, and is still 17 years of age. Encloses [not present] certificates of birth and baptism. The officer of the press gang noticed a discrepancy between the two certificates, which occurred because his father, now a sergeant in the 10th Dragoons, made a mistake about the date of his birth. Also encloses an affidavit from Butcher's grandmother.

Folio 110: enclosed with folios 108-109. Affidavit sworn before Nathaniel [Procter ?], Mayor of Rye, by Sarah Alce, 13 October 1810. Swears that she is the grandmother of William Butcher, the son of William and Hannah Butcher, who was impressed from the schooner Collingwood of Rye, Robert Mackreth, Master. Butcher was born 3 January 1794, but his mother Hannah and the Surgeon who attended her, Mr Coppard, have both since died.

Folio 111: enclosed with folios 108-109. Copy dated 14 October 1810 of a register of baptism for the year 1794 showing that William Butcher was baptised on 4 January at Winchelsea in the diocese of Chichester, Sussex, the son of William and Hannah Butcher. Signed by D Hollingbery, Rector.
