Description

Folios 65-66: Robert Rolles, HMS Lion, Downs. Reporting his arrival and that the Ships that were under Convoy had been disposed of. Reporting that while he was at St Helena he was joined by HMS St Albans, with a small convoy from the Cape, and HMS Fuerte from Monte Video. He directed them to proceed with him to England. Bad weather forced some convoy ships into Beerhaven (Bearhaven) and Cork. HMS St Albans and HMS Fuerte respectively conducted these ships to the Downs. He details capture of a French Privateer, La Reciprocitie from Dieppe near Beachy Head containing men being French, Prussians, Portuguese, Swedes, Danes and Americans and mentions another similar Vessel. He includes copies of his log (not enclosed) and HMS St Albans and HMS Fuerte's orders plus those received from Rear Admirals Sir Thomas Troubridge and [Charles] Stirling. He also mentions illness in his crew, The Azores, Ireland as well as [the Isle of] Wight.

Folios 67-68: enclosure with folios 65-66. Defects of HMS Lion dated 28 December 1807 by Robert Rolles, Captain, at Downes to the Admiralty. Detailed list of the Ship's defects. Also signed by James Harvey, HMS Lion's Carpenter.

Folios 68-69: enclosure with folios 65-66. Rear Admiral (of the White) [Charles] Stirling's Order dated 25 September 1807 to proceed to St Helena and England with Convoy to Captain [Richard] Rolles. Order to proceed under Convoy with the East India Company Ships from China, as well as others that may wish to be accompanied by you, to the Island of St Helena and to quickly unload their consignments. Also then to proceed with them to the Downs when you will notify the Admiralty of your arrival.

Folios 69-70: enclosure with folios 65-66. Order by George Murray, Rear Admiral of the White, Commander in Chief of a Squadron of HMS Ships and Vessels on a Particular Service, dated 8 September 1807, HMS Polyphemus off Monte Video to [Norborn?] Thompson, HMS Fuerte. An order to receive on board, plus Victuals for, 5 officers and 50 men of the St Helena Corps that were Prisoners of War of the Spaniards and proceed with them to St Helena. After landing them, you are to make your way to Spithead and report your arrival to the Admiralty. Also signed by Gideon Murray.

Folios 70-71: enclosure with folios 65-66: Order by Charles Stirling, Rear Admiral of the White, dated 11 October 1807, HMS Diadem Cape of Good Hope to Francis William Austin, Captain of HMS St Albans. Order to proceed with the East India Company's Ships under Convoy, as well as others that may wish to be accompanied by you, to the Island of St Helena and then proceed to the Downs where you will confirm your arrival to the Admiralty. Also signed by James Railton.

Folios 71-72: enclosure with folios 65-66. Order by Sir Thomas Troubridge, Baronet, Rear Admiral of the White and Commander in Chief, dated 7 November 1806, HMS Blenheim in Port Cornwallis to [Robert] Rolles, HMS Lion. Order to take HMS Greyhound under your command and under convoy the following Honourable Company's Ships of the Royal Charlotte, the Neptune, the Thames, the Marquis of Ely, the Arniston, the Cirencester and the Glatton as well as others that may wish to be accompanied by you, to China travelling through the Straits of Malacca and Singapore and onwards by the Carimato passage to Pulo Laut and the Straits of Macassar, dependant on the weather you may proceed through the Straits of Salayer and by the Gillol Passage into the Pacific Ocean to Macao. After passing the Macassar Straits or the Gillolo Passage dispatch HMS Greyhound to execute her secret orders. On arrival in China, anchor off Chunpee [Chuenpi?] at the entrance of the Bocca Tigris [Humen?], assist with the quick lading of the Honourable Vessels, take them under convoy to the Cape of Good Hope, through the Straits of Malacca or via an Eastern Route, and repair with your Convoy to the Downes if there are no further orders. Notify your arrival to the Admiralty. Also signed by James Clyde Harvey.
