Description

Folios 258-259: John Markham, HMS Hannibal, Plymouth Sound. States having had several men turned over from HMS Irresistible, who were pressed at Sea out of several vessels under her Convoy and who at that time expressed their wish to enter for His Majesty's Service, the case of these men has something rather hard in its as non of them have been able to obtain money for their promissary notes for the Run Home, nor have they received and Bounty. He requests to be informed whether they may be considered as Volunteers, which is often the case with those who enter immediately upon their being pressed. As HMS Irresistible's Books are here, he can take upon himself to say that no fraud or mistake can happen. There are a number marked as volunteers on her Books when at Jamaica and none with no notice whatever. He Requests you will likewise lay this before the Admiralty, that he may be able to satisfy any people who look upon him for that which should have been done by Captain, now Rear Admiral John Henry. These complaints were made soon after their being turned over.
