Description

Folios 200-201: Micajah Malbon, HMS Dryad, Flackery. He reports the death of the Honourable Robert Allaster Forbes who very unfortunately fell overboard on 8 October 1795 into the North Sea in a strong Gale, from HMS Dryad. Boats from HMS Kite picked him up. Surgeons from both HMS Dryad and HMS Kite attended but no Symptoms of life could be discovered. HMS Sea Gull having lost her main Topmast and carried away her Main Boom and the Gale increasing. He has judged it most prudent to go with the Squadron into Flackerey to get HMS Sea Gull refitted. The Russian Frigate Archipelago parted company on the Gale on the night before the Death of Captain Robert Allaster Forbes and he suspect she has returned to the Downs. In consequence of a letter from Consul at Christian Sands (enclosed) [not present] informing him the Argo Dutch Frigate, Two French Privateers and three Dutch Briggs (which had just left this Port) were cruising on this Coast. He proposes cruising in pursuit of them as per the orders to Captain Robert Allaster Forbes from Admiral Adam Duncan, until their or some Superior Officer are pleased to give him Orders to the Contrary. He informs he has appointed Lieutenant Adam McKenzie late of HMS Dryad to the Command of HMS Kite, he being the Senior Lieutenant of the Squadron.

Folios 202-203: enclosure with folios 200-201. Letter dated 7 October 1795 by Adam Mackenzie, HMS Dryad, at sea to Captain Micajah Malbon, HMS Kite. Reports the details of how Captain Robert Allaster Forbes died and the period leading up to his death. PS If you should sent this letter either to the Admiralty or Admiral Adam Duncan he request you will beg them to keep it secret, as he wishes to apprize his relations so as to effect the Female part as little as possible.

Folios 204-205: enclosure with folios 200-201. Letter dated 8 October 1795 by Micajah Malbon, HMS Dryad, North Sea, to Lieutenant Adam McKenzie [Adam MacKenzie]. Letter appointing him Acting Master and Commander of HMS Kite.

Folios 206-207: enclosure with folios 200-201. Letter dated 8 October 1795 by Micajah Malbon, HMS Kite, North Sea. Letter appointing himself Captain of HMS Dryad and Commander of the Squadron late under the Command of Captain Robert Forbes.
