Description

Folios 132-133: Alexander Mackay, No 23 Norfolk Street, Strand, London. Covering letter for the enclosed Copy of a letter sent to him as Regulating Officer for the Counties and Boroughs of Aberdeen & Banff, from the Admiralty signifying their Lordships disapprobation of his conduct in Regulating Men that were not fit for His Majesty's Service. Together with Mr Knowles, his Clerk's Postscript and the Young mans letter, who was rejected. He states that the man rejected was examined by Doctor William Robertson and was found fit for Service before they were enrolled bu him, and when they left the Port of Aberdeen, they were in all respects fit and as to any accident that might happen [to] them during the passage from Aberdeen to the Nore. [Description of what happened on the passage from Aberdeen to the Nore].

Folios 134-135: enclosure with folios 132-133. [Doctor] William Robertson, Aberdeen. To Alexander Mackay. Dated 3 December 1795. He informs that Lieutenant Cockburn called on him on 1 December 1795 and showed him a letter from the Admiralty that was brought to him that morning , addressed to the Regulating Officer, Aberdeen, without any name, which he had opened before he had called or told him any thing of it, he wished his opinion of it. He told him he had done wrong in opening the letter, and that he should have immediately forwarded it to you, he wished him to write to the Admiralty, and inform them that you had left Aberdeen, he was at a loss what to do but declined writing the Admiralty and advised him still to forward it care of Messrs Marsh & Creed: however he declined doing so, and wrote Captain Rutherford inclosing the Admiralty Letter the substance of which, as far as he remember, is on the other side. PS He expresses surprise at Adam Lessels and James Johnston being rejected. [Folio 135, 2nd Copy Letter]. Admiralty, London. To Regulating Officer, Aberdeen. Dated 25 November 1795. Adam Lessels and James Johnston from Aberdeen as part of the Quota Men have been found unfit for Service and Discharged. He is to signifie the Admiralty's disapprobation of your conduct in regulating men of their description and request to call on the County to replace them.
