Description

Folios 115-116: Alexander Mackay, [Regulating Officer], Banff. Acknowledge receipt of their letter dated 1 June 1795, enclosing an Act of Parliament, entitled An Act for enabling the Magistrates in the several Counties in Great Britain to raise and levy under certain regulations such able bodied and idle persons as shall be found within the said Counties to serve in His Majesty's Navy, and to signify their Lordships directions to him strictly to comply therewith so far as the same may depend on him, which shall be complied with on his part. In consequence of yours of the 4 June 1795 stating that Provost George McKilligin. of Banff having informed the Admiralty that the Quota of Men for that Burgh is raised, but that there was no Officer to regulate and receive the Men; He therefore proceeded to this place for that purpose, leaving Lieutenant Cockburn [George Cokburne?] at Aberdeen, as the time for the City quota had expired on the 8 June 1795, and the time for the County Quota does not commence till the 21 June 1795, as there has been some difference, between the City and County respecting the Assessments. He is sorry to find that Lieutenant Cockburn [George Cokburne?] has received orders to put himself under the Command of Captain Isaac Coffin Regulating [Officer] at Edinburgh which deprives him of the only Lieutenant he had.
