Description

Folios 101-102: Adam Mackenzie, HMS Kite, off Yarmouth. [Total of three sides] States before this time HMS Dryad must have arrived in the Downs and Captain Micajah Malbon will have informed you of everything respecting HMS Kite to the night of our separation, but as he is not certain that is the case. He thinks it his duty to inform you what happened Mr Mitchell His Majesty's Consul at Christian Sands wrote you by a Vessel bound to England. In which he informed you of our having detained an Armed Brig belonging to Guernsey, called the Prosperous Mary which Captain Micajah Malbon has delivered up to the Governor of Christian Sands. On the first instant HMS Savage arrived in a Bay near Christian Sands having been blown from the Coast of England - and on the second HMS Dryad and this vessel were getting under weigh to return to England, when express arrived from Captain John Inglis of HMS Coromandel to Mr Mitchell, informing him that HMS Coromandel had lost all her Masts and had eleven Men Drowned in a heavy gale. That she was in great distress and a number of her People had deserted. We sailed from Christian Sands on Sixth and on seventh got off Equoe but as it was blowing fresh and hazy weather they stood off shore again. [Details of the voyage]. They discovered that the heavy rolling in the night had worked loss the Cheeks of the Foremast, it therefore necessary to strike the Topmast until they were serviced and rig a jury mast abaft. On examining the Main Mast they found the head of it was all rotten but the outside shell, and even it had been gone in some places, as the Mast makers had driven a large plug to conceal the defects. He Shall endeavour to get to the Nore or will proceed to the Downs or return to Yarmouth Roads.
