Administrative / biographical background

The Admiralty Advisory Panel on Underwater Explosion Research was responsible for the direction of the Admiralty Underwater Explosion (UNDEX) Works at Rosyth, later renamed the Naval Construction Research Establishment (NCRE). The first meeting of the Panel was in October 1942. The Panel was reconstituted in June 1948, because of the increased workload of NCRE. The new Panel also took over the work of the Shock in Ships Committee. A separate Undex Sub-Panel was also set up. Professor Sir Ralph Fowler chaired the meetings until his death in July 1944, thereafter the Panel was normally chaired by the Superintendent, NCRE. The Panel reported to the Admiralty's Director of Scientific Research.
