Description

Folios 214-215: Messrs Ommanney & Druce (Navy Agents), London. Enclose an order signed by Captain William Jones Lye of HMS Bombay in 1808 appointing Lieutenant William Henry Herrick of HMS Procris to act as her commander, ask for him to be paid for his time in command. Note that Commander James Murray Gordon was absent from the Procris in temporary charge of HMS Terpsichore from May to November of that year and Lieutenant Herrick was in command, although he is shown on the ship's books as only a Lieutenant.

Folios 216-217: attached to folio 215. Order dated 27 May 1808 and signed by Captain William Jones Lye, HMS Bombay, off the Reef Buoy, to Lieutenant William Henry Herrick, commanding officer, HM Sloop Procris. Captain the Honourable George Elliot of HMS Modeste has ordered the Procris to escort the Walpole and Duke of Montrose across the line [of the Equator ?] and then to see any ships bound for Ben[????] safe into port. Directs the Lieutenant to carry out the orders originally given to Commander James Murray Gordon.
