Description

Folios 163-164: Robert Stuart Lambert, HMS Duncan, Douarnenez Bay. Encloses a statement from Caulker's Mate Thomas Hughes explaining the circumstances in which he failed to return from leave to HMS Donegal in 1811, and asking if the"R" against his name can be removed. Captain Lambert speaks highly of his conduct and also encloses [not present] a certificate from Captain Pulteney Malcolm. Hopes Hughes can be allowed to draw his pay for the Donegal. Summarises his service since 1803 in the Donegal, HMS Boyne, HMS Coquette, HMS Namur and the Duncan.

Folios 165-166: enclosed with folios 163-164. Letter dated 14 June 1813 from Thomas Hughes, HMS Duncan, to Captain Robert Stuart Lambert. Having already applied to Captain Pulteney Malcolm for his pay for 1811, explains as requested how he came to be marked as a deserter. He had been given leave from HMS Donnigal [HMS Donegal] at Spithead in February 1811 to allow him to go to Liverpool to deal with the death of his wife. While there he fell severely ill, so Regulating Captain Donald Macleod extended his leave. He was advised by Messrs Coltman and Carsaw, Surgeons, to go to Mr Perry, Druggist, for medicine. When his health began to recover he went to London to find Captain Pulteney Malcolm, but failing in this he went to the Nore and entered aboard HMS Coquette in hopes of catching up with the Donnigal. Instead he ended up being drafted to HMS Duncan.
