Description

Folios 160-161: H. Lambert, Hinde, Manchester Square. He is sending a report about the fate of Lasyer Vickery, Master's Mate on HMS Iphiginia, Lambert's ship, by Mr Henry, Midshipman. It is also going to Vice Admiral Bertie and Governor Farquahar enclosing the deposition of Mr Henry Midshipman who was woken by the pistol shot that killed Vickery. His account is the only information he has.

Folios 162-163: enclosure with folios 160-161. 'Account of the manner which the American ship the Thomas was retaken by lascars and blacks.' written by Mr Henry, Midshipman on HMS Iphiginia. He reports that the Thomas had been taken by HMS Iphiginia when cruising off Mauritius on May 19 1810 and Mr Vikery was sent aboard with a Midshipman and 17 men, 12 of whom were 'Lascars and Blacks'. The crew of the Thomas was taken out apart from the Captain, Chief Mate and the Steward. Mr Vickery was ill and left Mr Henry on watch on 27 May 1811 to be relieved by James Mitchell. At 2.0 o'clock, Mitchell and Tozer went to set the jib when the Chief Mate presented a pistol and told Mitchell the ship was in his possession. Mitchell was unarmed and, as he saw all 12 of the lascars and blacks on deck with arms, he was forced below decks. The Captain and Steward arrived on deck and seized John Nichols who was at the helm and threw him down the hatchway and Tozer was treated in the same way. The Captain, Mate and Steward went to the cabin where Vickery and Henry were and shot Mr Vickery, who died 4 days later. Henry was forced into into the State room and tied up although he heard Vickery entreat the Captain not to hurt him as the ship was absolutely in the Captain's possession. The Captain declared that shooting Mr Vickery was an accident but Henry is confident that it was deliberate and that also the Steward had orders to shoot him too. They took the ship to Foul Point in Madagascar and sent the men on shore to be marched round to Tamatave to be kept as prisoners of war including Mr Henry.
