The divisional responsibility for land drainage and flood protection was passed to the Flood and Coastal Defence Division from the Flood Defence Division in 1993. The role of the division continued after the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food was absorbed into the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in 2001. The engineers within the division are responsible for researching coastal defence, by carrying out tasks such as coastal behaviour assessments, flood prevention and research and development for flood and coastal defence.
