Description

Folio 353: George Martin, HMS Colossus, at Greenhithe. Replying to Admiralty request of 21 July to state the cases of 4 men impressed by Lieutenant Isaac Brookbank. 1. Joseph Bright, impressed from the Endeavour, a light collier with 14 crew including the master; 2. John Randall, impressed from a boat on the Thames; 3. and 4. John Rawlins and Robert King, impressed from the brig Concord, the master of which ship offered the lieutenant a bribe of 2 guineas to let the men escape, but both have since entered voluntarily. No protections were shown at the time.

Folios 354-355: enclosure with folios 353. Petition from Antony Wealands, master of the Endeavour, of Sunderland, describing the impressment of Bright, chief carpenter, despite his having an affidavit of his appointment and being listed in the ship's articles, so asking for his discharge.

Folios 356-357: enclosure with folios 353. Letter dated 19 July 1803 by Mr Gallaway, to Evan Nepean, asking for the discharge of John Randall, an appentice and enclosing the petition of Robrt Ford owner of the vessel Traffreen [?] of Weymouth.

Folios 358-359: enclosure with folios 356-357. Petition dated 18 July 1803 by Robert Ford, saying that Randall is legally bound to him and has not deserted from any of HM ships.

Folios 360-361: enclosure with folio 353. Petition dated 20 July 1803 by Robert Carter, master of the brig Concord, of the London Dock Company, pointing out he was given protection for 6 men employed on the ship, for 3 months from 31 May 1803, but that two of them, John Rawlins and Robert King, had been impressed.

Folios 362-363: enclosure with folios 360-361. Sworn statement dated 20 July 1803 from Robert Carter concerning the impressment of the two men, and pointing out that their formal protection did not end until 31 August.
