Folios 241-242: John Willoughby Marshall, HMS Lynx, Long Reach, River Thames. Having received Admiralty query of 11 April, asking why he had impressed I. Staine, boatswain of the vessel Brother, he says that when his lieutenant boarded her no protection had been shown and he had not even known the man was the boatswain until yesterday, when the Master made an application for him. Marshall immediately sent the officer to inspect the protection and then released the man, and says his directions have always been not to impress protected men.
