Folios 216-217: Edward Marsh, St Mary's, Scilly. Replying to Admiralty request of 6 August to give them a report of the coastline and defences, he answers that on the north side of the island there is a good landing for boats at Sandy Bar. On the east side there are two small bays near Mt Todden and except in an east wind frigates can anchor at the entrance of Crow Sound for a landing at either place. Notes that in the late war Sir Edward Pellew had made a redoubt of four guns on Mt Todden to guard the entrance and there is still a serviceable 18-pounder. A watch and signal is kept here. Further details follow of other landing points around the island and ordnance and gunpoints given, as well as a rundown of what defences were maintained in the last war. Adds that the Garrison has received a reinforcement of a captain and 35 privates so their company is complete and there are Sea Fencibles on the other islands. Notes that most of the men are 'perfect in the Great Gun exercise' and that a delivery of pikes has arrived and the men being trained to use them, as well as small arms, of which he has 400 in store. Numbers of Sea Fencibles given: 154 at St Mary's; 49 at St Agnes; 91 on Tresco; 45 on St Martin's; and 23 on Brear & Sampson.
