Description

Folios 210-211: Edward Marsh, St Mary's, Scilly. Advising that just as the hired cutter, King George, under Lieutenant Plowman, was getting under weigh with a convoy for Plymouth he had received the enclosed information from the Master of the snow Rialto, who had been chased by the privateer mentioned and who saw her bring to and board another vessel. As he had two valuable ships in the convoy, one from the Bahamas with cotton and $80,000, and another with timber, together with three coasters, he judged it prudent to strengthen the convoy by ordering the Revenue cutter stationed here to accompany them to the Lizard.

Folio 212: enclosure with folios 210-211. Note from Stephen Bacon, Master of the Rialto of London, dated 18 August 1803, saying that at 11am a French cutter brig of 18 guns, with red sides, a white figurehead and new sails, chased them and fired at them to bring them to, 30 leagues off St Martins' Island.

Folio 213: enclosure with folios 210-211. Copy of Marsh's letter dated 18 August 1803 ordering Thomas Worrall, commander of the Providence Revenue cutter, to put himself under the command of Lieut. Plowman, of the King George, and proceed with the convoy to the Lizard, in view of a French privateer having been spotted off the islands.
