Folios 206-207: Edward Marsh, St Mary's, Scilly. Sending a list of men [not now present] who have enrolled to be sea fencibles and says he hopes soon to have enough to man every gun in the garrison - of which there are 60 different calibres mounted but only 28 serviceable. Military force consists of 35 officers and men of the Garrison Battalion. Captain Veitch and Lieutenant Tregurtha arrived on 20 July and he has sent them on to other islands to begin recruitment there. Asks if it is possible for him to be allowed a list of the coastal Secret Signals by which he can ascertain if ships near the islands are friend or foe. Also notes that communication with the mainland is so uncertain that he sometimes waits 3-4 weeks for any exchange of information - unless their Lordships were pleased to grant him a cutter he has no way to let them know if the islands are attacked, nor to advise them of any intelligence he might have regarding enemy privateers in the offing.
