Description

Folios 196-197: Charles John Moore Mansfield, HMS Minotaur, Cawsand Bay. Since he saw the captured French frigate La Francois safe into port at the Dodman, as per Admiral Cornwallis's orders, he has been trying to regain the squadron but the winds have been against him. Meanwhile he has fallen in with and captured a number of other vessels: 3 more French ships: La Concord, La Prudence, and La Theresa, and 4 Dutch ships: Mijzorg, Breeda, Lers Trus, and Zoran Stroom [spellings unclear]. In manning these ships to take them back to Plymouth he has had to part with 120 seamen and marines, 3 lieutenants, 3 masters' mates, and 12 midshipmen. Therefore he thought it right to sail for Plymouth to collect them, and hopes their Lordships will approve as he is 40 short of complement. The last vessel boarded this evening proved to be from Smyrna, which means he is subject to quarantine, but hopes this will soon be taken off as she has a bill of health, and has been out 10 weeks, sailing for Amsterdam with cotton and silk. As soon as he can pick up his men and land his prisoners - 83 French and Dutch - he will be glad to proceed with his orders.
