Folios 139-140: Robert Mansel, HMS Beschermer, in the Wallet. Acknowledging receipt of Admiralty letter of 26 September, in which he is advised to use 'any piece of broken spar' to repair the rudder, and saying if the carpenter is not capable of such repairs their Lordships will appoint someone who is. Mansel says he finds no fault at all with the carpenter, on the contrary believes him capable of doing all his duty with credit. He is sorry to be troublesome but if he had been able to find any piece of wood remotely suitable to be so used he would not have bothered them again - but as the Beschermer is fitted up as a block ship she is not allowed a single spare spar of any description and has nothing of the kind on board beyond what is already in use. Asks again to be supplied by the dockyard and assures them without such repairs the ship cannot be got underweigh.
