Description

Folios 131-132: Robert Mansel, HMS Beschermer, in the Wallet. Sends on a letter he has received from Lieutenant Campbell, making a complaint against the Master of the Sheerness, a dockyard lighter, citing his insolent behaviour when Campbell was enforcing an order from Captain Maxfield of the Hound, on 7 September.

Folios 133-134: enclosure with folios 131-132. Letter dated 19 September 1803 by Lieutenant Lewis Campbell, HMS Beschemer, stating that while he was aboard HMS Hound, assisting to get her off Gunfleet Sand, they decided to lighten her by taking off the guns and stores into several small vessels. Campbell was ordered by Captain Maxfield to board the vessels and to take an inventory of the stores they had taken on. On the Sheerness, a dockyard vessel, he asked how much ale and stores from the Hound were aboard and did not receive a clear answer so told the man to light a candle so they could take an inventory - he answered that he would not. Campbell told him he was insolent and to go aboard the Hound, but he again refused in a 'particularly insolent' manner. Campbell left the matter in the hands of Captain Maxwell, but then the Hound sailed the next day and Campbell thinks that Maxfield had not had time to resolve the issue.
