Folios 122-123: Robert Mansel, HMS Beschermer, off Harwich. Acknowledges receipt of Admiralty letter of 27 August and says he has made enquiries about hiring a decked vessel for his own and the other two ships' use. Says one boat would not do for his own ship and the Leyden and Dictator, due to problems of distance. However he has been offered a deck boat that would do very well for him, at £20 per month. A second vessel could be taken for the other ships for 26 guineas a month. He notes that in the last war £60 a month was paid for a deck boat for the Beschermer alone so hopes their Lordships will consider the offer very low. Adds information that fresh beef is supplied from St Osyth, and as no other vessel but a flat boat can go upriver to fetch it the hired boats could get beef from Harwich, as happened when he first arrived.
