Description

Folios 84-85: Robert Mansel, HMS Beschermer, off Harwich. He has been asked by Rear Admiral Rowley to state the case of Thomas Luxton Smale, documents enclosed, now aboard his ship. Says Smale entered himself at the Rendezvous on Tower Hill on 7 June, is a landsman of about 23, says he was brought up as a merchant's clerk and does not appear to have been at sea.

Folios 86-87: enclosure with folios 84-85. Letter dated 11 July 1803 by W. Fawkener enclosing other documents and asking Sir Evan Nepean if he can obtain the release of Smale.

Folios 88-89: enclosure with folios 86-87. Letter dated 12 July 1803 by H Smale, telling the story of his nephew, Thomas Luxton Smale, the second son of a respectable wool manufacturer, who had imprudently spent his inheritance and entered for the Service aged only 23 - the family did not know what had become of him for weeks, his sister is in hysterics and ill with worry etc. Asks that he may be assisted to a better situation.

Folios 90-91: enclosure with folios 86-87. Letter dated 18 July 1803 by T. [Richbell?] at the general Rendezvous, Tower Hill, saying he has no record of a Thomas Luxton Smale having entered as a volunteer or being brought to him in that name.
