Description

Folios 77-78: Robert Mansel, HMS Beschermer, Golderman's Gat. Acknowledging Admiralty letter of 14 June informing him that impressed men are not entitled to the bounty. However the men have requested that the cirumstances of their impress be made known to their Lordships and the fact that they desired to be volunteers, but were not offered the chance to do. He asks that their case be reconsidered, especially as some have qualifications as seamen - who informed him that several landsmen were taken who were nevertheless allowed to volunteer and have received the bounty.

Folios 79-80: List of men now in the Beschermer with their circumstances of impress: James Davis, Duncan McGowin, Richard Hammond, Richard Collier, William Charles, John Moriarty, Robert Simmonds, Matt Seagrove, William Ash, Joseph Banner, Henry Wright, William Thompson, George Jackson, Joseph Rise were taken from merchant ships, desired to enter as volunteers but not asked. Hollis Bishop says the lieutenant gave him a shilling when he offered to enter, but was returned as impressed. James Ridley offered to enter but was not allowed, impressed. William Cooper was discharged from HMS Greyhound with a liberty ticket for 14 days but was impressed 3 days before the due date when he offered to enter as a volunteer. Edward Brooks offered to enter and says the regulating captain told him he would be considered a volunteer. Other men with similar stories (details given): John Jones, Henry Walker, Thomas Gale, William Simmonds, James Anthony, S. I. Bonnicke, William Catherill, George Lord, Elias Martin, Thomas Wyatt, William Appleby, William Williams, William Diffen, John Casey. Thomas Thompson says he is American and lost his protection. Daniel May and John Jennings entered for HMS Melpomene but were returned as impressed men. Henry Warne Ratty was one of Hoffam's Riggers who was cleared when impressed by HMS Hound but was again taken when drawing stores for HMSs Gorgon and Serapis, and not given the option of being a volunteer.
